 Today's field is Kaalavaasal at Madurai.The busiest bus juntion of Madurai.It was today's evening. Workers like Sithaal (women construction workers) were returing to home with cemented hands. We were issuing a phamphlet containing the message not to vote for cash to these hands. Tens of people from various walks of life joined under Forum for Elctoral Intergrity and were distributing the phmphlets and I was one among them. There were cultural programmes, display of banners, small speeches, etc., The response from the people was so impressive that everybody was reading. That was the first success. Many of them didnot put down.Will they adhere to contents of the campaign or will they be allowed to adhere? We have to wait and see.

International Women's Day

It was International Women's Day programme on 8th March at Madurai organised by Deepam Mahalir Membattu Iyakkam.There were lectures on Women and Politics by Prof.Sundaravalli, Women  and Forests by Dr.S.Dinakaran and mine was Science and Women.

I mentioned that women and science meant knowing the working of products produced by science which would help the women to get the benefits of science.In addition they must have scientific outlook on day to day living. Basically the women hailing from Self Help Group had to run the groups scientifically in time and all should participate in decision making.More over every women had to think twice or thrice before getting the loan. Getting unwanted loan would also  unscientific and superstitious that may trap them in debt.Moreover getting loan from Microfinanace Institutions was dangerous that was like falling prey to Godmen who ran away with our possesions and sometimes to death.Will the women around 100 in this field would accept this?

Free Computer Education to rural Children

The children of Thulir Illam attached to Thulir Science Centre started their learing of computer at Thulir Science Centre. It was a wonderful class of computer sceince with Thulir reading, Thulir Songs and Games.

A group of 20 from I batch was learnng the theory and the II batch waiting in the another room.The stdents were able to tell the partes of computers and were drawing the computer and its accessaries with line drawing.The class started with Thulir song. M/S Jothimurugan, II B.Sc., Physics students from Thiyagarajar College , Madurai and a volunteer-coordinator  of Thulir Illams in and around Pothumbau, Mahalakshmi, Computer Teacher and a I Msc., Student from Saraswathi Narayanan College of Madurai were engaging the students. Computer classes are going on Saturdays and Sundays of evey week for 60 enrolled children.Now children and college students are showing interests to join the Thulir Science Centre.

The First and Foremost Pongal Vizha

Deepam women of S.Alangulam, Madurai West Block celebrated pongal vizha on 24th, Jan. The vizha had a quiz for women on chemitsry in day to day liife to celebrate International Year of Chemistry and metric mela. Four women's team participated in the quiz. Prof.P.Rajamanickam conducted the quiz. Mr . M/s Vennila and Muthulakshmi conducted metric mela.Later, Mr.HariBabu, President,TNSF, Madurai West branch distributed prizes. The programme was organised under the leadership of mrs.Padma, District president, Deepam.Around 50 women participated.Pongal and Sundal were distributed. Arivu thendral was introduced by vennila.Small booklets were sold.

Measuring by observation

Deepam Pongal Vizha today at Palanganatham. The very same items. Very same method.Sweet pongal. Interactive science quiz for women.Measurement prog.for children and women.Mobilisation of women from poor sections in urban area.Interested in science and its explanations.Organised by M/S Anushya, Muthulakshmi, Vennila, Devi and Mariammal. Age was no bar.Children to elders particpated.The filed is a backyard portion of urban hopuses. But the  transfer of scientific knowldge took the women forward .

It is the Deepam's field at Villapuram at Madurai.Nearly 50 women particpated in Deepam Pongal Vizha.All of them were members of Deepam Mahalir Membattu Iyakkam. Pongal Vizhahe, of the women, by the women and for the women.It was an wonderful scene with the a gathering without caste, religion and launguage.It was a festival re-enacting village pongal.Pongal with Science Quiz on day to chemistry celeberating Internationa Year of Chemistry.
